WBTC April 2025 Update: Expanding Multichain

Since launching in 2018, WBTC has led the wrapped Bitcoin market and marked a breakthrough in BTC-Fi. As the most established wrapped BTC solution, WBTC brought Bitcoin into DeFi and helped define the space. But to push Bitcoin utility even further, we’ve never stopped evolving.

To support broader adoption and usability, WBTC is expanding to more chains.

Going Native Across Chains

WBTC will soon be deployed natively on select networks outside of Ethereum. With native deployments comes cross-chain movement — merchants will burn WBTC on Ethereum and mint native WBTC on another chain. While this is a key part of enabling seamless multichain liquidity, it typically introduces added costs.

To remove that friction, WBTC will waive all mint and burn fees when merchants initiate cross-chain strategies.

This change aligns with our goal of improving cost-efficiency and making cross-chain BTC access smoother for users and merchants alike.

Improving Exchange Interoperability

In parallel with network expansion, WBTC is working with exchanges to streamline BTC deposits. The goal: enable users to deposit BTC via WBTC on Ethereum, while exchanges recognize it as BTC.

By leveraging Ethereum’s fast transaction speeds and access to DeFi, users can more conveniently use BTC across the ecosystem — benefiting from both the transfer efficiency and the yield opportunities of holding BTC.

WBTC is collaborating with exchanges to solve the wrapping and unwrapping experience, ensuring asset security while removing user friction.

To help make that happen, WBTC will absorb all mint and redemption fees if the exchange itself becomes a WBTC merchant. This approach removes a major operational barrier and incentivizes native support, bringing BTC one step closer to being as composable and easy to use as stablecoins.

What’s Next for WBTC?

Does this mean WBTC on Ethereum will go away? Not at all.

Instead, WBTC is evolving into a multichain-native representation of BTC. Over time, it may come to serve as a “co-BTC” standard across chains — a shared, trusted interface for BTC liquidity wherever users are.

Anytime, Anywhere

As the crypto space matures, Bitcoin must remain interoperable, accessible, and useful. WBTC will continue adapting to make BTC more composable across ecosystems.

By expanding across networks and improving integration paths, WBTC strengthens the foundation for BTC liquidity throughout the entire space — bringing more flexibility, connectivity, and access for all.

We’re not replacing Bitcoin — we’re building the infrastructure to bring it everywhere.
