WBTC April 2026 Update: Bitcoin Expands Beyond Holding

While overall WBTC supply saw a slight decrease during April, the trend broadly reflected wider market conditions across tokenized Bitcoin assets rather than isolated protocol-specific activity. Rising BTC prices can often lead some holders to rotate back into native BTC, realize profits, reduce leverage, or consolidate positions across chains and platforms. Similar supply contractions were also observed across other tokenized Bitcoin assets during the same period, pointing to broader market repositioning rather than weakening demand for on-chain Bitcoin usage.

April was a defining month for Bitcoin onchain. BTC climbed from roughly $68K at the start of April to nearly $78K by month end, driven by continued institutional interest, growing ETF momentum, improving macro sentiment, and rising activity across DeFi markets. As market confidence strengthened, Bitcoin holders increasingly looked beyond passive exposure toward strategies that could unlock additional utility onchain.

Across the month, WBTC continued expanding across lending markets, collateral systems, yield platforms, and multichain infrastructure, reinforcing its role as the most integrated form of Bitcoin in DeFi.

SparkLend Opens the Floodgates for WBTC

One of the largest developments this month came from SparkLend.

Following strong usage demand, Spark increased the WBTC supply cap from 3,000 to 30,000 WBTC, a 10x expansion from the original limit. Shortly after the update, supplied WBTC on SparkLend climbed to over $226M, reflecting growing demand for tokenized Bitcoin borrowing and lending activity.

The update also introduced additional safeguards:

  • Supply cap increases limited to 500 WBTC increments

  • 12-hour cooldown periods between increases

  • Enhanced response time during volatile market conditions

Rather than simply increasing capacity, the update showed how Bitcoin continues becoming a larger component of onchain credit markets.

One Click Bitcoin Strategies Continue Expanding

Starknet Earn
Starknet introduced simplified WBTC deployment for EVM users, allowing users to deploy WBTC strategies within a few clicks and begin earning in under 30 seconds.

Beefy Finance
Beefy Finance launched Beefy Zap for WBTC, streamlining bridging, swapping, liquidity provision, and staking into a single transaction flow. Users can now access more than 60 WBTC strategies through one-click deployment.

Bitcoin Finds More Routes Into DeFi

TeleSwap
TeleSwap highlighted simplified BTC ↔ WBTC movement for users entering and exiting DeFi strategies. Large BTC swaps into WBTC became faster and more efficient, reducing friction for users moving between Bitcoin and onchain ecosystems.

WBTC on Binance Web3 Wallet Earn by Native
Meanwhile, Binance Web3 Wallet Earn saw strong early traction following the launch of WBTC pools powered by Native. Within roughly two weeks of launch, TVL surpassed $12M, with participation accessible from as little as 0.002 BTC. The growth reflects rising demand for simpler Bitcoin-native DeFi access directly through familiar wallet interfaces.

WBTC Discusses Bitcoin’s Expanding DeFi Role on Cryptopolitan

WBTC joined Cryptopolitan for a podcast featuring YC Song Nadia, Director of Marketing Operations at WBTC, discussing Bitcoin’s growing role across DeFi and multichain ecosystems.

The conversation covered:

  • Bitcoin’s expansion into DeFi

  • WBTC’s role across chains

  • The future of onchain BTC utility

Bitcoin Enters the USDD Collateral System

For the first time, Bitcoin could be used as collateral to mint USDD through WBTC Vaults on USDD.

Previously, USDD collateral primarily consisted of TRX and stablecoin-based assets. The addition of WBTC introduced Bitcoin into the protocol’s collateral framework, expanding diversification and opening new DeFi opportunities for BTC holders. Users can now:

  • Deposit WBTC as collateral

  • Mint USDD directly against BTC exposure

  • Access TRON DeFi without selling Bitcoin

Two vault structures were introduced:

  • 130% minimum collateral ratio

  • 150% minimum collateral ratio

Stability fees were reduced to as low as 2.5% for early users.

To support onboarding, WBTC also released a full step-by-step video guide showing how to get WBTC on TRON and use it within USDD Vaults.

Strengthening Cross Chain Security Standards

Following the LayerZero/rsETH incident involving cross-chain infrastructure, WBTC temporarily paused OFT cross-chain transfers as a precautionary measure while additional safeguards were implemented.

Transfers later resumed after:

  • Cross-chain DVN configurations were upgraded

  • Validation requirements were strengthened

The response reflected a broader priority across DeFi infrastructure: maintaining operational resilience while continuing to support multichain expansion. WBTC continues to actively monitor cross-chain infrastructure conditions and review security assumptions to strengthen long term network security and operational stability.

Conclusion: Bitcoin’s Expanding Role Across DeFi

April reinforced a larger trend already taking shape across crypto markets. Bitcoin is no longer limited to passive holding alone. Across lending markets, collateral systems, yield platforms, and multichain ecosystems, BTC is increasingly becoming an active participant in onchain finance.

Throughout the month, WBTC continued expanding across new integrations, infrastructure improvements, and protocol collaborations, supporting broader access to Bitcoin utility across chains. As DeFi infrastructure matures further, the next phase will likely focus on deeper integrations, improved capital efficiency, and simpler user access across ecosystems.

Frequently Asked Questions

WBTC vs BTC Differences
BTC is the native asset of the Bitcoin network, while WBTC is a 1:1 multichain token used on smart contract chains like Ethereum, Solana, TRON and BNB.

How to use Bitcoin in DeFi
Use WBTC as collateral for loans, provide liquidity on DEXs to earn fees, or participate in automated yield-farming strategies. (e.g. Aave, Spark, Morpho, Concrete, Uniswap, PancakeSwap)

How to convert BTC to WBTC
Users can convert BTC to WBTC through supported CEXs, DEXs, or on-chain protocols. During the process, BTC is sent to the other party and an equivalent amount of WBTC is received by the user. (e.g. Binance, Bybit, Bitget, Uniswap, PancakeSwap)
